How it works The process of breathing retraining is not complicated. It involves the patient learning a series of breathing exercises which are designed to reduce the breathing rate and volume, and in so doing, elevate retained CO2 levels. Once the brain becomes used to the higher levels of CO2, the medullary trigger will return to its normal setting and the breathing rate will normalise. Obviously there is much more to the process and it has taken many years to develop the program to its present stage. There have been previous attempts to teach this method using video and written instruction but they have been singularly ineffective for one simple reason. If patients do not know what they are aiming for it is very difficult for them to know when they have achieved the correct levels. Even though there are empirical measurements of progress, and even though an identifiable goal exists, most people fail to achieve success with this method. The answer obviously lies in having a trained therapist available to supervise the progress and to guide the patient through the program. This is the basis behind the development of the Breathing Well program. The program has three specific components:
