Once the decision has been made to introduce breathing retraining as
a part of the practice, a staff member is selected to undergo training.
The training has two components, one theoretical and the other practical:
- The theoretical module involves the study of the basics of
physiology, anatomy and biochemistry as it applies to dysfunctional
breathing. This is done remotely via email or fax and should not take
more than around 30 - 40 hours of study.
Assessments and assignments are submitted to the examining board, marked
and returned with comments and suggestions for further study (if required).
Once the trainee has attained the acceptable level of competence, a
certificate is issued. Once certified, the trainee is eligible for practical
training.
- The practical module consists of a six session long weekend
which will be held regionally.
During this session, the trainee will be exposed to hands-on teaching
of patients, firstly as an observer, then doing the teaching under the
supervision of the trainer.
There are six segments, commencing on Friday evening and ending on Monday
at lunchtime when the successful trainee is presented with a Certificate
of Practice. Included in this segment is training in the techniques
of selling the concept to the patient.
